Aiyyaa Review Critical Conditionam

Cast  Rani Mukerji, Prithviraj, Amey Wagh, Subodh Bhave, Anita Date

Director Sachin Kundalkar

My Rating 2/5

Rani Mukerji is a brilliant performer. Most will agree with me. And I had been missing her in action for a long time now.

So when I saw the first Trailer of Aiyyaa, I was extremely curious to see the film. After all it looked very different from what she has done till now. And the skimpy skin displaying outfits and those pelvic thrusts... Desperation or Super confidence... I wanted to know more.

Story seemed interesting. A Marathi mulgi falls in love with the tall, dark, handsome south Indian man. While her parents plan her rishta and consequent engagement to a sweet Marathi boy, she is getting deeper and deeper into the fantasy world she has created around her hot hero. So who will get the girl in the end.... Simple na...

But trust Aiyyaa to take simple and then go tripping so hard that the trip turns bad and then refuses to end.

Two hours thirty minute is a duration which makes sure the movie becomes like an over chewed gum that has lost all its flavor and you just want to spit it out.  Considering the original story is from one part of the three part story of Sachin Kundalkar's Gandh, it is a very greedy attempt to turn it into this long tale.

In Aiyyaa, the Deshpande's are quite a typical small town middle class Maharashtrian family. They are loud and quirky.  Meenakshi (Rani) lives in a fantasy world where she is Madhuri, Sridevi and Juhi... In the real world she is looking for a job and a way to escape the predictable mundane life of a middle class family. Her father is retired and the mother is a loudspeaker with volume turned to maximum. Her Dadi wheels herself around with a dazzling set of gold teeth and her brother Nana is a wastrel taking care of stray dogs. The purpose of the parents is to find a suitable boy for Meenakshi who is quickly hitting the wrong side of 20.

Rani falls in love with Surya, a blood shot eyed tall dark Tamil man who is a student of the Art Department where she works. Her nose leads to him and after that it is a long journey where she follows his smell to his house, a Red light area, around campus... She even steals his T-shirt, while he is totally unaware of her overtures. She even learns Tamil and watches late night Tamilian channels... to impress this quiet type guy. To make matters complicated, one of the guys who comes to see her as a prospective bride, likes her and that very minute the rishta is fixed and an engagement date announced.

From here on, the film is a dragging story of Meenakshi's struggle to get out of this Rishta, follow Surya even more frantically and fool the suitor. Subodh Bhave has played his role as a Maharashtrian middle class earnest boy who loves Deepti Naval and hums Tumko Dekha toh extremely well. The only sane person in this crazy set up. Not to forget Maina, the teeth out, dressed in WTF clothes from Bolly songs who is a character hard to digest by most people. She takes bizarre to another level.

This film is not going to appeal to people who are not exposed to the old marathi comedy films that Ashok Saraf and Sachin used to make... Very loud deliveries and in your face humour.  But then even they will get confused with the trying to be experimental and different kind of treatment as the film progresses. Add to it the weak script and some clumsy direction.

For me there were only a few genuinely funny moments, the scene where Rani goes to buy cocaine and the crazy Papad song that happens between her brother and Maina... though it comes out of nowhere, it reminds me of certain moments/characters of Almodovar's films.

But when there is a sketchy story to tell, beyond a point, even a Rani with her sparkling performance can not save it.

Experimental and absurd at times, with a hero who does not speak till the end... A heroine who is otherwise non-stop chatterbox can not even once go up to him and talk.... well, you can only be forgiving till a point.

I did not hate the film, I did not come out with a headache, but the last half hour just made me say "Get over with this already". The big reveal about the hero comes so late in the film and is treated so badly with the worse dialogues I have heard in a long time, that it totally fails to impress.

Despite me truly wanting to like this for Rani, I ended up feeling bad for her to be in this confused film.

The music is fantastic though, and is a relief. Special mention of Rani's thumkas in Aga Bai, she really heats up the screen with her moves in this one.

Watch it if you are a Rani fan though, she is a good reason, the only reason.

Yaad

(In roman)

Raat bhar neend se jagaati rahi, hawaa tere ghar se hoke aati rahi

Meri dehleez par deti rahi dastak, ter yaad phir rulaati rahi

Hum mile the kab ye yaad nahi, mujhe aaj bhi par hai yaad ye

Naam lete the mera log magar, awaaz tere naam kee aati rahi...

Sabr ke mere imtihaan ye rab leta raha ta umr magar

Na usne haar mani ab tak, aur usski zidd meri gustakhiyan badhati rahi

Kehte hain ke ishq karne walon ki umr chhoti hoti hai...

Uss umr ka karna bhi kya jismain, tere bagair saans bas aati rahi jaati rahi

Seven Psychopaths Trailer - Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken

From the Director of In Bruges Martin McDonagh comes Seven Psychopaths. With an ensemble cast of stellar actors like Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken, Colin Farrell and Sam Rockwell, this is a must watch. It is in the same genre as In Bruges where comedy meets crime.

Its the story of a struggling screenwriter who becomes embroiled with the underworld.

A quote from the film to give you a taste

Hans (Walken) : An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.

Billy (Sam Rockwell) : No, it doesn't. There'll be one guy left with one eye. How's the last blind guy gonna take out the eye of the last guy left?

English Vinglish Sweet Like Laddoo Vaddoo

Its 10:30 in the morning at Cinemax Versova. I enter the theater and its abuzz with a group of Tamilian ladies, who just can't wait for English Vinglish to start. I smile as I hear them say Sridevi in every sentence. She has not been forgotten. No siree. They were also there because they felt this was somewhere their story too.

Sridevi. Let me say at the outset, I like her.

She has picked the perfect comeback vehicle. This movies is for all of us who have loved her from Sadma to Chalbaaz, Lamhe to Judai... The eternal Chandni. It is also for all the under-dog housewives who keep toiling their lives away in the kitchen, taking care of their house, husbands and kids... without getting a thank you. She has decided to return sans glamour and in a role that uses her age as an asset, intrinsic to the set up. Where Madhuri failed Sri succeeds.

The movie opens with detailed establishing shots of Mrs.Shashi Godbole (Sridevi). She is a regular middle class housewife, who has what her family and the society at large today terms as a handicap. She can not speak English. Apart from a broken sentence here and a word there. Her husband (Adil Hussain) fell in love with her at first sight and now they have 2 kids and life has settled in a routine... But every time, she is reminded by a very rude daughter that she is a matter of shame and not pride to her because of her failure to converse in English. She runs a successful Laddoo making business from home and is known for making the most delicious Laddoos. But even this is not seen as an achievement by anyone in her family.

Shashi bears with all the taunts about her bad English, and cries silent tears... till she reaches USA to attend her niece's wedding and decides after a belittling incident to join an English teaching class. Her journey from there... of exploring a new world, learning a new language and re-discovering herself.. that is what English Vinglish is all about.

A very easy to relate character is the strength of this film. Sridevi makes the perfect Shashi. She still has the tentative smile, beautiful expressive eyes and a figure that belies her age. Her performance is restrained, never going over-the-top. Its a sign of maturity from an actress who used to match steps with Jumping Jack Jeetendra. The film shows her "Michael Jacksoni" glimpse too. I wish they had not made her a Maharashtrian, when clearly she is still a South Indian in her demeanor and diction. There is no particular reason as to why she couldn't be Shashi Iyer. That would have added more to her performance. After all the film revolves around her character. Another jarring fact for me was why she waited all her life to learn English when India has its own English learning classes in every nukkad.

Adil Hussain is perfect in his character of a busy, settled in his routine and taking his wife for granted man.

The story is treated very simply and without any layers. It is largely predictable. Shashi's daughter played by Navika Kotia is relentlessly mean, and I hope its not how teenagers behave all the time with their moms. The foreigner and Shashi track is sweet, but could have been explored a little more.

English Vinglish is so slice of life that it sometimes forgets its a movie and needs to step up.

But the heart of this film is firmly in the right place, the casting is excellent, specially the characters in her English Class. Each one memorable. Special mention Mehdi Nebbou as Laurent. The cameo by Mr. Amitabh Bachchan is an icing on the cake. He is totally having a ball and his brief presence brings a big smile on your face.

A confident debut by Gauri Shinde. Power to women directors! But more depth needed to be created in situations and moments. It is rushing towards the end it seemed at times. At others, there were unnecessary stays on faces. But the film never gets stuck and passes like a breeze.

Another plus is the way New York has been shot. Lovely.

The music is very average, I liked the title track and Navrai Majhi.

I would say go watch it. It has a lot going for it as a film and for the kind of story its telling.

Oh and I spoke to one of the ladies watching it with me, Mrs Krishnan (she politely declined to share her first name). She was around 55 years old and had come with her daughter. Her own English was broken but she understood me well. She said she loved the film and Sridevi. Her only grouse was "Why they not made her into a Tamilian, that is only problem" She said she was going to tell all her friends to come and watch.

I am sure she will, after all there are millions of Shashis in India.

My Rating 3/5

Starbuck Trailer The French Vicky Donor, Kind of.

So here is the trailer of the original Canadian French film which is being re-made with Vince Vaughn in lead. Similar to Vicky Donor in theme, but definitely both are separate stories. A heartwarming film. Must watch.

Challa - Song - Jab Tak Hai Jaan

My favorite director and actor come together in Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Yash Chopra & Shahrukh Khan.
Here is Challa. Based on a Punjabi folk Challa style. The song is suitably peppy, waiting for more music from this film.
Shahrukh is looking fresh and fun. Looking forward.
